培养学生跨文化交际意识,进一步拓宽国际视野,使学生意识到中国同样是个多民族,多文化的地方,多元文化的产生离不开人民。学生通过文章的学习能够明白:

(2) Learn to cooperate with others. Each of us matters in society.

(Before Class) Enjoy an English song Hotel California
  Hotel California is sung by a pop band named “Eagles”.
Which country does Eagle stand for? We are going to learn about an important part of West America, California.
Step 1: Lead-in
l         What do you know about California?
l         Show Ss the map of the USA and ask them to describe its location, size, population etc.
l         Show Ss more pictures about California and encourage them to talk.
Anyway, California, a large state, is abundant in agricultural products, the financial and cultural centre with so many industries, and actually the most multicultural state of the USA. Today we are going to learn more about it.

Step 2 : Skimming
l         Skim the passage and find out: 
1. In what order is the passage organized?
2. Why is the USA/ California called a melting pot? (There are many immigrants to the USA and there are many cultures and nationalities. So it is a place in which people, ideas, etc of different kinds gradually get mixed together.)
Which sentence can show the topic of the passage?
This is not surprising when you know the history of California, which, at various times, has attracted people from nearly every country in the world.
3.Beside each date note down an important event in Californian history.
Step 3 :Detailed Reading
 Qs: 1. Native Americans:     How were they treated by Europeans?
    2: Where did the first Spanish occupy and how did they affect people there?
 (the south and northwest coast of the USA; religious, teach Catholic; 40% of Californians speak Spanish)
    3. Fill in the blanks about its different immigrants.

   Model:  Where were you from? What made you come here? How is your life here?
Are you enjoying your life here? What’s your plan for your future life?
l         Enjoy the four sentences in the passage, which impresses you most?
(1)      When the first people arrived in what we now know as California, no one really knows.
(2)      However, some survived these terrible times and today there are more native Americans living in California than in any other state.
    There are about 25,000 Russian-Americans living in and around San Francisco.
(3)      This is why today over 40% of Californians speak Spanish as a first or second language.
(4)      It was the building of the railway from the west to the east coast that brought even large numbers to California in the 1860s.
What has attracted so many people to California? How will the future be like there? Read the last paragraph together.

教学反思
1.       教材教学目标基本达成,学生在了解细节--加州的历史--的前提下对其当今文化的形成有重要的影响。了解美国这个大熔炉的真正含义。
2.       教学设计中细节问题过多,如果再设计就会把细节以选择题的形式加以考查,更注重其文化内涵的探究,给予学生足够的空间进行思维。
3.       本课是一节县级公开课,当时各位听课老师的反应也是学生互动这块欠缺。
