Learning goals:
1.The students will be able to understand the kinds of festivals around the world and the reasons for celebrating them.
 2.The students will compare the festivals mentioned in the text with the Chinese Spring Festival .
3. The students will be able to create their own festivals including the reasons.
Important and Difficult points :
 1. To get the students to grasp the detailed information of the kinds of festivals around the world
2. To get the students to create their own festivals .
Teaching procedures
Step One   Warming up
Group work:
(1)Making a comparison
Purpose: To get Ss to know about the two important festivals
Throughout the world, there are a great many festivals. Some have many things in common; others are quite different in many aspects. To the Chinese people, the Spring Festival is the most popular. It is as important as Christmas to the Westerners. The teacher hands out the worksheet below and ask Ss to work in groups of four to complete it.

 Chinese Spring festival
From the 1st day to the 5th day of the first lunar month
On Dec.25th
cleaning, hair cut, buying new clothes, decorating with the spring couplets…
cleaning, buying gifts, getting up Christmas trees, putting up lights and decorations, decorating sugar, cookies…

Purpose : To guide Ss to know what the topic is about.
Pair work: Ss work in pair to discuss the following questions.
Q1: Which do you prefer, the Chinese Spring Festival or Christmas? Why?
Q2: How does your family celebrate the yearly Spring Festival?
Q3: Why do we celebrate the Spring Festival?
Q4: Do you think festivals help us understand our culture and history?

The teacher presents the following questions before playing the tape. With the questions in mind, the Ss will have a better understanding of the text. Work in pairs and practice.

Task 4    Summarizing the text

1.Questions and answers
Purpose: To make Ss draw inferences from what they learn
Pair work: The students work on the following questions in pairs.
Q1: Many festivals are celebrated at the same time, often at certain times of the year. Why do we celebrate these festivals at these times?
Q2: Compare  Halloween with the Chinese Spring Festival and Christmas. How are they similar or different?
Q3. Do you think holding festivals is the only way to help understand culture? In what other ways?
Purpose : To make Ss reflect upon the festival: The Day of the Dead
Pair work:Ss work in pairs, playing the role of a newspaper reporter and an African American. Finally the teacher invites some pairs to act out their interview.
Model: R-reporter    A-African American
R: Good morning. I’m from ZhejiangDaily. I’d like to know about The Day of the Dead. May I ask you a few questions?
A: Sure.
Step Four   Reflective thinking
Purpose: To develop Ss’s reflective thinking about festivals
Group-work: With more contact with the outside world, more and more Chinese young people like Christmas. What do you think of the phenomenon? Why do you think so? The teacher asks the group-leader to deliver their opinions.
Step Five   Discussion
Purpose : To have Ss consider the advantages and disadvantages in holding the new festivals
Great changes have taken place in the past decades in China. Throughout China many cities are creating varieties of festivals to develop their local economy, for instance, Zhejiang Ningbo Fashion Festival, Jiaxing South China Boat Culture Festival, Tongxiang Chrysanthemum Festival…. What effects do the festivals bring to these cities? Good effects or Bad effects? Make a list.

Pair work,如:Questions and answers还有individual work ,: 阅读课文时布置给学生的各项任务。小组讨论的形式使每个学生都有话可说,从而激活每位学生的思维,调动起学生想要了解更多的有关节日的兴趣,绝大多数学生发言积极,但也有个别学生不会用英语表达,只能用中文讨论。Pair work1: Which do you prefer, the Chinese Spring Festival or Christmas? Why?和问题3: Why do we celebrate the Spring Festival?使一部分同桌不能流利地表达,有的表达的很浅显,有的表达的不完整,大部分学生还是表达的很全面、很透彻,但活动的目的已达到:每位学生都在开口说英语。阅读过程分Fast reading,careful reading ,true or false , Fast reading是培养学生快速阅读概括文章中心的能力,大部分学生能在规定时间内准确概括文章的主题思想。careful reading培养学生发现问题解决问题的能力,有的学生对阅读教材处理的较好,能根据上下文猜测词汇的意思,并能完成布置的有关内容。阅读后设计Questions and answers和interview,这两部分深化了阅读课文,问使学生从课文中走到了课外。Reflective thinking和discussion 将课堂效果达到了高潮,学生把所学的知识和实际生活结合起来进行了热烈的讨论,但由于时间有限,只有两组学生在课堂上进行了阐述,所以下次应考虑Reflective thinking将去掉。让同桌间相互作你问我答,同桌间互问互答的活动形式能使每位学生都能开口,课堂气氛活跃。在问答环节的问题
